Charity Sew Day 2019
21 Sep @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pmFree
This year’s Charity Sew Day is for Shannon’s Bridge – a registered charity and largely volunteer run organisation to help connect patients and existing palliative care services and support that started in my local small town, Creswick.
They have created emergency symptom control packs (called Shannon’s Packs after the young woman that the Charity is named after) that is aimed to reduce visits to Emergency Departments for terminally ill patients especially on weekends or in areas without 24 hour nursing or medical support.
Shannon’s Bridge has also opened up an End of Life Hub – a welcoming space in Creswick where anyone is welcome to drop in and talk about grief, death and dying. Topics that are often not discussed at all, yet affect us all.
They have regular events such as art therapy, yoga, pet therapy and slow stitching.
They also provide Carer’s Packs which are small bags with a few lovely things in them to help the Carer during the emotional and often stressful time whilst caring for a loved one in their illness.
Our Charity Sew Day will be making up zippy pouches for the Carer’s packs – big enough to hold the care items, but small enough to be a useful pouch after the contents have been used.
And Shannon’s Bridge also provide local hospitals and hospices with Handover bags that are used to place a person’s belongings when they pass away. The standard way to give these items back to the next of kin is in a blue garbage bag…. Shannon’s Bridge believe that a lightweight, handmade-with-love bag is a much more fitting way for a loved one’s effects to be handled.

So we need to make bags and zippy pouches!
There is no charge to attend this sew day, just BYO sewing machine and your enthusiasm! If you have some fabric you can bring along (2 x FQ or Half Yards), thread, 14″ or 16″ zippers that would also be awesome! And it is also BYO lunch. I will have tea and coffee available along with some morning and afternoon nibbles.
Please RSVP below as I need to track numbers and I will also then give you the exact address details and instructions on how to find us!
And if you can’t make it on the day, read all about the other ways you can help!
There will be an ongoing need for both of these items, so feel free to keep on sending them to me until I say stop! 🙂
The Charity Sew Day will go from 10am to 4pm and we will need not only sewists and their sewing machines, but people to cut fabric and pin pieces and also iron fabric along the way as we construct these items together!
