Rainbow Slider Quilt Binding

By October 14, 2023December 1st, 2023blog

I have finally finished my Rainbow Slider Quilt – the one I made to write the pattern and to launch our Sew A Jelly Roll day in September! And I LOVE IT!

This is the quilt top having a photo shoot outside on a sunny day recently.

I had originally thought I would straight line machine quilt it on my domestic sewing machine during our sewalong day, but that weekend I was so sick I couldn’t even sit at my sewing machine, let alone do something hard (domestic free motion quilting is hard for me!!). So I eventually decided I would pop it up on Lily the Longarm and give it a digital all over design.

Yes, that is the Quilt Barn Attic where my Bernina Q24 longarm is (and all the Said With Love fabric resides on the other side!).

I finally chose my favourite all over design which is Modern Curves by Anita Shackelford ( https://www.anitashackelford.net/modern-home-page.html ) which gives the quilt some movement without overpowering the design.

I LOVE how it turned a fairly easy, straightline quilt pattern into something more!!

So then there was the question about binding…… I had two choices….. the same teal print from Rainbow Sherbet I used on the backing….. or to make a scrappy binding that matched the colours as they changed around the quilt…. I put the question onto social media to see what everyone thought.

The answers were fantastic!… the poll I put up in my stories was almost 50/50

But the comments on Instagram and Facebook where overwhelmingly in favour of me using the same teal as the backing!!

Want to know which one I chose???….. drumroll……

I went scrappy! So each colourway has that colour binding too…. it took a bit of fiddling! So why did I choose that instead of the teal?

  1. I felt the teal would be a really obvious frame to the quilt and take your eye away from the rainbow colours and wave effect of the quilting.
  2. I wanted to push myself to try something a little out of the norm and see if I could really line up those seams! (which I pretty much did except for one!) YAY!

Sadly the weather has been awful here for the past couple of days, so there is no lovely full shot of the quilt all bound…. stay tuned!!!!
