Felix’s Bird Quilt – Progress

By June 28, 2025blog

My great-nephew turned 10 on the 2nd June and I wanted to make him a quilt….. I decided that way back in about February, but life being life, I only managed to start making the quilt AFTER his birthday! Oops!

I had started collecting various bird block patterns (which all turned out to be paper pieced EEK!) and I just started making them one by one.

The first one was normally pieced (I didn’t realise then how lovely and easy that is!) and is called Blue Bird by Mom and Me Quilting Company. The fabric is Ombre Bloom by V&Co and I’ll be using that in and around the bird blocks.

The second block is just the cutest little foundation paper pieced bird by Riley Blake. I couldn’t resist adding in even more birds by using the penguin fabric!

Then I decided to up the ante and made this stunner

Rainbow Flight foundation paper pieced bird by Quiet Play. Just stunning! And oh so many pieces! Eek! If I could face it, I would change just a couple of fabrics around, but there is no way I am unpicking this block!! The background blue is also a shot cotton that Spotlight used to sell and it frays A LOT! So definitely no unpicking : )

Then I saw the cutest pattern from Apples and Beavers with a mumma duck and two little ducklings

This squawking little duckling running to catch up to big brother and mum was just perfect!

I really needed a break from Foundation Paper PIecing (FPP) by this point, but the blocks kept on coming!

This puffin block from Penny Spool Quilts is the latest to join the bird quilt.

To put a bit of context for the quilt, these birds are actually going to be in and around a large bird house. Some sitting on top, flying around, feeding on the feeding tray or, in the case of the duckies, walking along the grass underneath the large bird house.

Now I am not sure in what world all these (and all the others about to be added) would be in the same bird house, but wouldn’t it be fun?

So wish me luck that I get it finished before Felix turns 11 (or 21!).

I am glad to know I am not the only one who falls behind on sewing projects 😀 But this will be a great quilt, with all these beautiful birds. Thank you for sharing not only the pictures but also info on the patterns. I will sure check some of them out!
And I understand you wish for some traditional piecing (I think you wrote more about this in your newsletter). I participated in an adven project with FPP, now I am part of a BOM with FPP and I am actually more than a year behind another BOM with FPP. I only have limited sewing time and I am so looking forward to some regular old classic piecing (chain piecing!) – even though I really enjoy all my FPP projects!

Hehehe… that is a LOT of FPP projects you have been doing! Yes, my next project that I start will be some easier sewing that is for sure!
