Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts

By May 21, 2025blog

Welcome to my day on the Blog Tour for the brand new book by Michelle Lander Cain (better known to me and you as @frombolttobeauty on Instagram!).

I am Anne Boundy of Said With Love: online fabric store owner, pattern designer, retreat host and self-confessed fabricaholic!

Michelle’s new book is called Not-Your-Typical Jelly Roll Quilts and well, just wow! I so enjoyed sitting down and going through each beautifully photographed page!

I just NEEDED to get all of my jelly rolls out of my stash so I could select one for a project to make for the blog tour…… OOPS! I fell in love with three different projects and needed to crack open FOUR jelly rolls!

If, however, your jelly roll stash isn’t quite as well enhanced as mine is : ), we do have some jelly rolls in stock for Aussies / New Zealanders to purchase.

Watch my video to see which three projects I fell in love with and what fabrics I selected for them as well as lots more about the book!

You can purchase the book (as either a physical book or a digital e-book) from C&T Publishing’s website and I have an affiliate link you can use.

Michelle has placed her 14 projects into sections of the book based on the project size. Runners & Wall hangings, Small Throws, Large Throws and Bed-Sized Quilts. Though as you will see in my video, I tweaked those sizings to suit me!

The photography in the book is just gorgeous, showing you exactly how the quilt will look in your home (or the home of the lucky recipient!) as well as having good diagrams to follow as you make things.

I mean, check out Pod Patrol! I want to be that kid reading in that teepee!

And this project called Buoyant Hearts was fourth on my list…. I may still make it when I get some more spare spots in my making list! Because you all know how much I love hearts! (Check out my A Year Of Hearts blocks and quilts from last year!)

So just to prove that I am thorough in my reviews, there was one teeny thing I felt that could be improved for Michelle’s next book (because I am sure there will be another!).

In the book Michelle does say that when there is a reason to press to a particular side she will note it in the pattern, however I would have liked a few more directions shown in the book for pressing anyway. I do like to make sure my projects are as flat as possible!

Admittedly there was only one place in the three projects I worked on that I felt pressing in a particular direction would have worked better and it wasn’t noted on the diagrams. I can be a bit pedantic with pressing!

Everything else was well laid out! I obviously tweaked how I made the projects in terms of sizing, so I did have to do some extra work to figure out cutting requirements for my smaller / larger projects. As I chose to change the project from the book, so I took all responsibility for that extra brain work! : )

And I loved that the projects from the book didn’t look cookie cutter ‘jelly roll’ quilts! They really are ‘not-your-typical’ jelly roll quilts!

I hope you love seeing this gorgeous book and rush to the website to purchase it! I can’t wait to see what projects people make from it!

And psssst… if you haven’t watched the video yet, please do. There *might* be a giveaway of an e-book in there!

My links to C&T Publishing for your to purchase a hard copy or e-book are affiliate links. I get a small percentage of each sale. The cost to you is no different. Using my affiliate links helps me to make great content for you!
