Foundation Paper Piecing with Cutterpillar

By April 17, 2025blog

Late last year I purchased a Cutterpillar lightbox and recently I had some Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) to do, so I finally got to use it!

I set up my Glow lightbox with cutting mat next to my machine. There is a self healing cutting mat that goes on top of the lightbox, so you can not only see where the FPP lines are, you can also cut on it! Such a time saver!

I also set up my wool pressing mat and mini Oliso Pro iron and I had such an enjoyable day sewing, trimming and pressing away!

I had seen quite a few people using the Cutterpillar lightboxes and really wondered if they were all they were cracked up to be, but yes, they are!

They are really thin, so don’t take up much space (I have mine with all my rulers in the shelf under my cutting table). The mini one (which I also have so I can take to retreats and sew days!) requires a power point, but the larger one is rechargeable so having it on my sewing table with out a cable attached was great.

I have been pretty careful with them because they are so thin, they sit on the shelf with only a couple of rulers on top of them and I have kept the mini’s packaging box as that is what I will use to take it to retreats with.

PLUS you can use magnets on them to hold papers if you need to trace things. The mini lightboard has the metal plates inside, so you all need are the Cutterpillar magnets (and wow they are strong and nothing else I had on hand did the trick, so you do need theirs). For the larger lightboard you need to purchase the metal stick on plates that go underneath and the magnets separately.

Wow does it make tracing a breeze! I used to do the ‘put it up on a window’ thing which is extremely painful!

So, now that I have tried out the Cutterpillar Glow lightboards with cutting mat and magnets I can now say I’m a fan AND I have signed up to be an affiliate!

So if you would like 15% off your purchase of a Cutterpillar product (and wow, I haven’t even talked about the really bright and flexible light you can get for your sewing machine!) just use the code SAIDWITHLOVE when you check out.

And stay tuned for a few videos where I am using it!

Aussies – the US website doesn’t have the ability to check out with an Aussie shipping address, but if you email them direct support@cutterpillar.com and give my code and name, they will be able to sort you out. Warning however, shipping is pricey! Thankfully our Aussie dollar is a little stronger at the moment.

FYI I purchased both the large cutterpillar glow and the mini cutterpillar glow and the magnet set and flexible light myself. They were not provided by anyone. My opinions of the products are my own.

If you purchase using my affiliate link you are helping me continue to create content and design patterns for you! Thank you.
