Sew A Jelly Roll Day 2024

By September 9, 2024blog

One of my favourite days of the year is coming up on the 21st September – Moda Fabrics Sew A Jelly Roll Day!

Now I like to call it INTERnational Sew A Jelly Roll Day of course, but when you are posting anything on socials the hashtag #projectjellyroll2024 is the best one to use.

So this year I am NOT going to start a new project (as tempting as that may be!!)…. I am going to be finishing off a jelly roll project that has been a WIP (work in progress) for way too long!

Waaay back in around 2017 / 2018, Sheena, an IG friend, was downsizing her stash and had this cute little quilt top made of Ambleside fabric by Brenda Riddle Designs

It is gorgeous and so perfectly made, I couldn’t resist buying it from her.

I had always wanted to make it bigger, as I had not only an Ambleside jelly roll, but a layer cake, so had plenty of fabric in which to enlarge it!

So recently I got the project tub back out and started working out how much larger I wanted the quilt to be… it worked out I needed to make another 70 odd blocks to make it into a queen sized quilt!

The pattern is Shortcake by Cluck Cluck Sew (which I have made before if you want to see and read about that) and I did tweak how I made the blocks, especially the 9 patch blocks.

So the layer cake became the pieces for the courthouse block

and the jelly roll became the 9 patch blocks!

There has been many an afternoon / early evening spent just sewing away. Sewing that isn’t too taxing on the brain so it is relaxing and oh so very enjoyable!

Then finally lots of beautiful blocks were finished (even a few extra I was on such a roll!)

And even though I now have a hanging design wall (see the video over on my YouTube Channel!), this quilt is way too large for that, so it was back to the design lounge floor again!

As this is such a scrappy quilt, it didn’t really matter where I put the blocks as long as there was one courthouse block, one 9 patch block and repeat!

This means for Sew A Jelly Roll Day I will have a queen sized quilt top that I plan to quilt on Lily the Longarm! So I am planning on FINISHING a jelly roll project on Sew A Jelly Roll Day for a change!

Now if you want to get enthused by all the beautiful jelly rolls available in our shop , Moda Fabrics have released some gorgeous free jelly roll patterns for you this year. Isn’t Star Flower just gorgeous?! This one was oh so tempting!

Just click on the image to be taken to the pattern on the Moda website.

Moda has also released a great video to go with the TiddlyWinks2 pattern if you want to watch that.

Or if you aren’t in the mood for a whole quilt , how about a tote?

that looks a lot of fun doing some weaving and then making a tote!

So whatever you are planning for Sew A Jelly Roll Day 2024, I hope you have lots of fun and can’t wait to see your projects!
