The Layer Cake Tumble Quilt is a new pattern (as well as a kit) from the Fat Quarter Shop as part of their Short Cut Quilt Series.
I chose The Flower Farm fabric for my version of the Layer Cake Tumble quilt – I just fell in love with the pinks and florals in this collection from Bunny Hill Designs.
I mean, check out the main print – can you see that cute little snail in there?
As usual, I did tweak the pattern a little bit from the version (available free from The Fat Quarter Shop). I kept my layer cake squares at 10″ instead of cutting them down (I don’t starch mine like Kimberly does) , as I used yardage for my sashing and therefore wasn’t restricted by any particular number of jelly roll strips available in a roll.
And to be a little bit different I chose two different colours of sashing, a light one for the darker coloured prints in the collection and this gorgeous Tea Rose colour for the lighter prints.
The finished layout became sort of a zigzag diagonally across the quilt!
I used all the layer cake squares too, so my quilt was 6 blocks by 7 blocks for a finished size of approx 70″ x 80″
This is a quick and easy quilt to make – I made the quilt top in an afternoon! So this can be a great quilt pattern to turn to when you need a finish very quickly or just an enjoyable weekend easy sewing.
I quilted this with an all over quilting design called Camellia – gorgeous big camellia flowers all across the quilt – a perfect pattern! Bound in the dark stripe from the collection. (and yes, that is my Julia binding baby helping me out with the binding!)
I have a few pieces of The Flower Farm left in my online shop here or if you aren’t in Australia check out The Flower Farm fabric on Fat Quarter Shop
You can get the free Layer Cake Tumble quilt pattern here and there is also a great video on the Fat Quarter Shop Youtube.
