When I saw the pattern Sunsets (by Charisma Horton and available as a digital PDF at her website https://charismascorner.com/product/digital-pattern-sunsets/ ) I wanted to make it straight away!
But you know me, I had to tweak things a bit! I had a bundle of the gorgeous ombre fabrics from Jennifer Sampou that I knew would look beautiful in this pattern.
I started it back in 2024 when I went to Raylee’s retreat (for more info on those head to her website https://sunflowerstitcheries.com/events/sewcial-retreats/ ).
The ombre fabric worked beautifully without having a join in the straight fabrics below the sunsets and I also decided to help with the effect of looking at a sunset over water, I changed the width of the strips under the sunsets.
It started to come into shape by the end of that retreat, but it took me quite a while after that to come up with how I wanted to lay it out. I felt that putting them together as the pattern suggests, was just a bit too much for the eyes.
So at the Penola Patchwork Party retreat in 2025 (still some spaces left for 2026) I decided that I would offset them with some sashing both vertically and horizontally.
That was so much better! Calmer, could really appreciate each of the sunsets, and the fabrics are beautiful!
Yet again it took me a while to get it up onto the longarm, and I chose the waves pattern before remembering that it is a painfully slow pattern to stitch out. Argh. But it looks sooo good!
Anyhoo, three days later, I had a finished quilt! I used some of the ombre fabric for the binding and also some of it on the backing!
I used bamboo batting so it has a lovely drape to it but hopefully still warm people sitting on the couch!
This is the first finish for 2026 and one of my WIPs in the UFOChallenge2026, so I get to tick off a WIP! Yay!
