Quick Design Board

By April 12, 2023May 5th, 2023blog

I have been wanting a little design board on the wall for a while now (actually I really want a HUGE one too!!) and this Easter I decided it was time to do it!

I stopped in at Spotlight (big box store in Australia) and picked up a reasonably priced canvas… it was called Crafters Choice Stretched Canvas in white and it comes in lots of different sizes. I selected the 30″ x 40″ size for the spot I had to fill. They come in sizes from 8″ x 10″ up to 36″ x 48″

I then decided to get some flanelette from Spotlight too… it was 1.47m wide, so I grabbed 1.5m (so it was a big square) and would amply fit the canvas I had.

I could have used batting, but I had seen people saying that flannelette was pretty good too, so I though I would try it!

Sadly, the staple gun I have had for years (but haven’t used for over a decade!) was broken when I finally found it, so a new one from the local hardware store was bought for around $20.

And then the fun began! So much so that I forgot to take any pictures of the stretching of the flannelette over the canvas and the use of the staple gun : ) There is something VERY satisfying about using a staple gun!!

I pulled the flannelette over the canvas and then turned it over. Stapled a few staples on one side and then made sure it was flat and stapled in some on the opposite side. Repeated the same on the two sides and then trimmed off the excess flannelette on all sides, leaving some extra on the corners.

I folded the corners over neatly and popped some more staples in and around the corner.

And before you could say ‘Easter Bunny!’, it was done!

I used 3M velcro tabs to attach to the back of the canvas (I left some wood of the canvas frame clear of flannelette so they would attach well) and made sure it was lined up well on the wall and stuck it up!

And it is up! I love it : ) The flannelette works well to hold my blocks up and my little design board looks great up on the wall!

A fun little Easter project that will be very useful as well as beautiful with my quilt blocks up there!

And whilst I was at Spotlight, these hexie canvases came home with me!! These are going to have some favourite fabrics attached and will become some wall art.
